In 550 BC, Rome was the second largest city in Italy, with Tarentum being the largest.[] It had an area of about 285 ha (700 acres) and an estimated population of 35,000. Other sources suggest the population was just under 100,000 from 600 to 500 BC. When the Republic was founded in 509 BC the census recorded a population of 130,000.
