The Editor of this volume jzublished, in 1772, 1 a work entitled Essays on Song writing, with; a Collection of such English Songs as are most' eminent' for [zoetical merit. The Essays were four in number one on Song-writing in gen eral and one on each of 'the' three classes into which the Collection of Songs was distributed. The [lieces in the collection itself were rather se lect than numerous and firinci/zally served as exemfili/fications of the ideas inculcated in the Essays relative to the character and diversities of this kind of [zoetical com/zositions. The vol ume was honoured with a rece/ztion which firo ducea'a demand for a second edition in 1774. For many years fiast, this imjzression hasalso been exhausted, and whim of the'work have been only occasionally to be met with. fls ia quiries were still from time to time made, after it among the booksellers, the Editor was asked the question whether he had any intention of re.
