The Editor of this volume jzublished, in 1772, 1 a work entitled Essays on Song writing, with; a Collection of such English Songs as are most' eminent' for [zoetical merit. The Essays were four in number one on Song-writing in gen eral and one on each of 'the' three classes into which the Collection of Songs was distributed. The [lieces in the collection itself were rather se lect than numerous and firinci/zally served as exemfili/fications of the ideas inculcated in the Essays relative to the character and diversities of this kind of [zoetical com/zositions. The vol ume was honoured with a rece/ztion which firo ducea'a demand for a second edition in 1774.
