This is the answer key of Volume 1 of the entire set of 12 volumes of word problems solving strategies. If you want to set a solid foundation in math, grasping the techniques on solving word problems is the key to it. This set of books teaches you the techniques and strategies you need to solve word problems.
Sample question in this volume:
Amanda has 7 puppies, and Lily has 2 fewer puppies than Amanda. How many puppies does Lily have?
Reasoning and solution:
2 fewer= minus 2
From "Lily has 2 fewer puppies than Amanda", we are comparing the number of puppies that Amanda has with the number of puppies that Lily has. "Lily" is to the left side of the word "than"; "Amanda" is to the right side of the word "than". We move from the right side of the word "than" to the left side: the number of puppies that Amanda has minus 2 (2 fewer) is the number of puppies that Lily has or 7 minus 2 is the number of puppies that Lily has:
7-2=5
Lily has 5 puppies.
The addition and subtraction in this volume are only for numbers 0 to 20. The techniques on using the "than" method to solve problems with " more than or less than" in them, on using "matching games" to solve word problems with " how much more or how much less" in them, on using "combining" to do addition and on using "leaving a group" to subtract are covered in this volume. There is more in the volume than what is mentioned.
Detailed explanations of the reasoning and solving strategies for each and every problem in Volume 1 are given in this book.
