This is the workbook of Volume 11-B of the entire set of 12 volumes of word problems solving strategies. If you want to set a solid foundation in math, grasping the techniques on solving word problems is the key to it. This set of books teaches you the techniques and strategies you need to solve word problems.
Sample question in this volume:
Lily has 42 books. If Hanna has 1/6 more than Lily, how many books does Hanna have?
Reasoning and solution:
"Hanna has 1/6 more than Lily", the noun phrase after the word "than" is "Lily" so the number of books that Lily has is the amount in 1 or in 6/6 (or 1 whole). Then, Hanna's books are in what fractional part of 1 (or 1 whole)?
Attention: 1/6 is not an amount or a quantity but a fractional part.
"Hanna has 1/6 more than Lily", means the number of books that Hanna has is in a fractional part that is 1/6 more than the fractional part that Lily's books are in. We know that number of books that Lily has is in 1 so the fractional part that Hanna's books are in is 1/6 more than 1. "1/6 more than 1" = 1+1/6 =7/6 so the number of books that Hanna has is in 7/6. We multiply the fractional part, 7/6, with the amount in 1, the number of books that Lily has, to find the amount in the fractional part, the number of books that Hanna has:
42 x 7/6 =49 books
Hanna has 49 books.
The techniques and strategies on finding percent of increase and percent of decrease, on using fractional parts only to solve a word problem and on using formulas to find the circumference and area of a circle. The volume teaches more than what is mentioned.
Detailed explanations of the reasoning and solving strategies for each and every problem are given in Volume 11-B Answer Key.
