A biological attack on US military bases included San Antonio. The viral agent spread across Texas, and the dead reanimated and attacked the living. As survivors crossed the state and made their way to Pine Spring Canyon, each met others and brought them along. Elizabeth (Liz) Jameson met Viet Nam Veterans Harry Walters and John Tilman, that had volunteers to aid her in her quest to find her daughters when they separated during their escape from San Antonio. Unfortunately, when they returned to recover the children, they were picked up by three soldiers. When Liz grew ill during the search for the girls, Harry and John called a halt to the search for the soldiers and headed to Pine Spring Canyon, sure that the children would be safe with the three soldiers. Matt Monroe, Jake Curtis, and Larry Benson, who rescued Liz's children, Matt found the information about Pine Creek Canyon and began their trek west. Along the way, Matt and his team rescued other survivors and found security and safety at a campground near Kerrville. The camp, under Matt's supervision, feed and clothe an ever-growing population of primarily children and women. Brian Jameson, surviving the initial attack on the military base in San Antonio, made his way to Pine Creek Canyon. He collected survivors and rescued others from the abuses of criminals and gangs. Brian arrived with his daughters in had to find Liz sick but brought a doctor with the skill that may help. A small group of young campers, Kelly Boudreau, her friends Britt, Rudy, Bruce, Jen, and Denise, survived their stay at a campsite long enough to head west but found the trip terrifying and fraught with danger. They lost one member, but along the way, they added a young vet Jack Gomez and his two dogs, Zeus and Apollo, and rescued a young boy while searching for sanctuary. Groups of survivors found their way to Pine Creek Canyon one by one. Some brought skills, while others brought trouble. As the population grew, so did the herds of horses, cattle, goats, chickens, and gardens. General Will Edmonds delegated more and more duties, not always happy with the outcome. Outside Pine Creek Canyon, gangs were willing to prey on others, killing and taking everything they had worked to build. The Kerrville VA Hospital turned into a prison when the attack took place. The place locked down, but it was too late. The infection was already inside and that spelled mayhem for the hundreds of medical professionals and patients inside. Only a few quick-thinking medical doctors and staff made it possible for even a few of the patients to survive the first onslaught of the infection. But after locking off the floors, then what? How long could a few able-bodied staff protect twenty-plus disabled vets and stay in the hospital with hundreds of the dead roaming the halls and no way to get out? The Pine Creek Canyon Community is growing as more and more groups of survivors arrive. General Will Edmonds delegated more and more duties, not always happy with the outcome. But, as the community grows, they find that the danger is more than the dead. The living had become a menace. Outside Pine Creek Canyon, gangs from the south are willing to prey on others, killing and taking everything they worked to build.
