Excerpt from Bertram Wodehouse Currie, 1827-1896, Vol. 1: Recollections, Letters and Journals Mr. Bertram Wodehouse Currie, who was the only surviving brother of Sir Philip Currie, British Ambas sador at Constantinople, was born in 1827. He was the second son of Mr. Raikes Currie, of Minley Manor, Hants, who was a banker in Cornhill, and who died in 1881. His mother was the daughter of the second Baron Wodehouse. Mr. Currie was educated at Eton, and then travelled abroad, thus acquiring the mastery of foreign languages, which stood him in good stead in after days in the City and at the Brussels Conference. On returning home he entered his father's banking business, which in 1864 was amalgamated with the firm of Glyn, Mills, and Company, and-which from that time forth was known by the name of Glyn, Mills, Currie, and Company. The strong will and the remarkable business capacities of the young partner, for his father took little or no share in the transaction of the business, soon enabled him to play a prominent part in the management.
