Immigration is a global phenomenon necessitated mainly by global inequality, among other factors. Immigration is as old as humanity and is expected to continue if humans exist. The greatest challenge of immigration has been found in the scholarly world not to be the number of people that migrate across national borders but on integrating immigrants into mainstream society. Bittersweet is based on my research outcome that examined the impact of government policies and programs in integrating Nigerian immigrants into the United States of America. The book discusses the challenges immigrants, including Nigerian immigrants, face regarding their integration and settlement in the United States. It also examines government and established population roles assisting immigrants settling in the host country. It details the discriminatory hurdles immigrants face in integrating into the United States. Bittersweet details how the author engaged a combination of two theoretical frameworks, Giddens (1979,1984) and Morçöl (2010), in her study as the conceptual framework for the analysis of the impact of government actions or inactions on immigrants' integration. Bittersweet is, therefore, a concept book because it discusses immigration and integration concepts. A lot could be learned about the culture of Nigerians in the book; consequently, it is also a cultural-based book. Finally, the book encapsulates government policies on immigration integration, making it a policy book. The immigration policies and programs of New Jersey were explored as a basis for understanding the hiccups between government-planned programs and the implementation/management of such programs. The book showed that government programs do not impact immigrants because of various factors, including porous information dissemination and non-involvement of immigrants for which the government programs are formulated. It ended with multiple implications, including for social Determinants of Health.
