Dietrich Bonhoeffer died in a concentration camp in 1945. Today he is considered one of the most popular theologian thinkers worldwide. The remarkable career of his memory in both Western and Eastern Germany is described and analyzed here. The story follows closely the different communities interested in Bonhoeffer's resistance and death, their design of memorials, anniversaries, speeches or expositions, and explains where they actually aimed for. Thus, the book can also be read as a history of political ethics in post-war German Protestantism.
