This book will look at how the U.S. deliberately used education as part of its counterinsurgency strategy in the Philippines to pacify anti-occupation violence and assimilate the archipelago under American governance. In doing so, this study highlights America's educational efforts to assimilate and "civilize" African Americans, during the post Civil War Reconstruction period, and American Indians, during the U.S.'s expansion to the Western Territories and how the U.S. transferred those lessons to its actions in the Philippines. It will also show how the military and civilian governments emphasis on education helped convince Filipinos of American benevolence. This study focuses on the Christianized tribes of the archipelago and will cover the period of American involvement in the Philippines between 1898 and 1909.
