In the early years the singer found little success while appearing under the name Gerry Dorsey, prompting Tom Jones' manager to suggest a more colorful moniker. In 1967, after adopting his more popular stage name, Humperdink filled the bill for a sick vocalist on Sunday Night at the Palladium and became an overnight success.
