Aldrich's humor is as delicate as his poetry, and as bright and unfailing as any in literature. Charles Dudly Warner at his best approaches it, but his work, fine as it is, lacks the delicate perfection of finish which distinguishes Aldrich's. These delightful sketches of European travel are suffused with this exquisite humor, as an October day is with mellow sunshine. As for the descriptions of places, and so on, our traveler leaves those to the guidebooks. What he sees is the people; and what a portrait gallery he has given us,—from the elaborate study of Smith, the London waiter, to the company waiting at the Pope's reception, and the "instantaneous view" in a crowded street of Naples, "of the whole neighborhood spanking its child."
