Rockabilly fans should be aware that there isn't much Dixie-fried wailing on this DVD release from the British Stompertime label -- doesn't feature any rockabilly per se, but is jam-packed with classic honky tonk, hard country and hillbilly boogie tunes from a stellar cast, including , , and many others. The performances were all taken from television appearances shot between 1955 and 1957, and have been transferred to disc in the full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The most notable and jarring thing about the image quality is the color -- the flesh tones are a strange mottled orange, the reds and light blues are so bright they glow, and the general look suggests this material either went through a low-tech video intermediary before transfer to disc or this archive material was shot in black-and-white and later colorized by an overzealous hand. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Surround, though the original source material was monophonic and the disc still sounds that way. The songs are performed in English with no multiple language options or subtitles included. There are no bonus materials, and the menu for cuing up individual songs is clumsy and hard to use. Despite it all, the music is great; these are mostly crackling live performances from some of the giants of country music of the 1950s, and with 50 songs in a bit over 100 minutes, this is like a jukebox that never stops turning out the hits. Fans of vintage C&W who can overlook the disc's flaws will be rewarded with some superb honky tonk sounds, though they may want to adjust the color balance on their monitors first.
