This is a story about family. A love story. A brave portrayal of a soldier and warrior. A poetic look inside the mind of a man suffering and struggling with post traumatic stress disorder. This is the story of my brother Dean. One of the bravest men you could ever meet. Dean was a normal man. A normal brother. A normal son. A normal father. But my brother lived with demons. He joined the army at a young age and he excelled. He found his calling in life. He loved it. However, this all changed when he was sent to Iraq to fight for his country. He went and he saw things that people should never have to see. A big part of my brother was left in Iraq. He came home and relived his time there each night when he closed his eyes. He had nightmares, visions and flashbacks. He lost friends while he was there and then a lot more when he came home; who chose to end their lives rather than live with their demons. I have written this book in his memory. The story is told in poetry form from the point of view of us-his family- and of Dean himself. Some of the stories I tell have been fictionalised because unfortunately I didn't get his first hand experience so that I could put them into my own words but in order to tell his story I have put myself into his shoes as best as I possibly could. I have written this book to highlight that there are more than one side to a mental health battle. As you go through the stories you will read Dean's version of events and also his story through the eye's of his family. My brother was a hero and this is his story.
