College sophomore Liz Castelli, newly engaged and regretting it more each day, is insulted by Vietnam veteran Kevin O'Reilly at a protest rally against the war. It is 1970 and there is turmoil on college campuses but the chaos in Liz's life increases when she discovers her fiancé is unfaithful. Facing an uncertain future because of an injury he suffered in the war, Kevin continues to offend Liz each time they meet as a way of keeping his attraction for her in control. When he is given a good report from the doctor, he feels free to pursue her. They fall in love quickly and assume they'll have a happy future but when Kevin injures his leg again, he's given the news he's dreaded the most, causing him to act rashly and end his relationship with Liz. A persistent old admirer of Liz's uses this opportunity to lie to Kevin, insuring that the couple remain apart. Years pass until the paths of Kevin and Liz cross again. When Kevin learns what he was told long ago was a lie, he is determined to reignite the love that he's sure still exists between them. Liz, having been so devastated in the past, is afraid to take another chance but an older and wiser Kevin refuses to give up.
