Certain European orchestras -- one thinks of the and -- have the music of specific composers in their bones. Such a relationship is rarer in the younger U.S., but here is one. The relationship between the and the music of is deep. served as the orchestra's music director from 1963 to 1970, and he was a key mentor to the 's current and longtime music director, . The long experience shows in this 2024 recording of mostly early, mostly Americanist works by , leavened a bit by the brisk of 1985. The recording was made at Kleinhans Hall in Buffalo, but it was based on a 2022 Carnegie Hall concert celebrating the 100th anniversary of ' birth. That is usually a congenial venue for the sort of crisp 20th century music in which specializes, but here, it tends to swallow up the harpsichord in the (microphone placement may be to blame). In general, though, there are convincing performances throughout, in which captures both ' indebtedness to and the new directions in which he was striking out.
