's 2013 two-fer pairs 's fizzy bubblegum 1972 LP with its uber-nostalgic 1973 sequel, . is by far the more interesting of the two records, an attempt by the oldies act to record new songs -- a deliberately tricky ploy that was successful artistically thanks to producer and songwriter , but which did nothing commercially. The opposite is true of , which was their only record to crack the Billboard Top 40. It is nostalgic through and through, nothing but oldies but goodies. The first side or so -- "Lover's Question" through "Wild Weekend" -- appears to have been cut in the studio, while the rest captures the group's crowd-pleasing live act. It's an energetic revue but it's also exhausting, in no small part because it's nothing but shtick. Perhaps it was fun in concert, but on record it's a chore. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
