Willi Wissemann returns to Germany, escaping French captivity and the prospect of languishing in a POW camp. He is determined to settle down-marry his fiancée, take an instructor's job, and retire from air combat all together. But fate has other ideas. Devastated by a personal calamity, he slips into inexorable bitterness. His differences with Oberst Thomsen come to a head. In a rapt moment of bitter hostility, he lashes out and suffers grave consequences. He's officially court-martialed, demoted, and sent back to the front.
