Scientifically known as Phaselous vulgari, black beans are quite popular in the cuisines of Latin and South America, as well as those of the American Southwest. Trader Joe’s Organic Black Beans are low in sodium and a good source of fiber. They’re tender and almost meaty in texture – this may very well be why they’re a perennial favorite protein source for vegetarians. Or, it may be because they are so satisfying, whether enjoyed on their own or used in recipes. Or, it may have something to do with the fact that, at just under a buck a can, they’re so wonderfully affordable. Serve them with rice, wrap them up in tortillas, or really go for the protein gold and serve them alongside a piece of grilled fish or lean pork chop.
