On February 15, 1971 two Sheriff's Deputies from Ellis County drove to Dallas and asked the Dallas County Sheriff's office for assistance in the execution of arrest warrants related to a series of home burglaries occurring in Ellis County. The burglars were career criminals Adolpho Rene Guzman and Leonardo Ramos Lopez. They were also heroin addicts and depended on home burglaries to fund their habit. Three Dallas County Deputies drove to the last known address of the burglars at 2810 Ingersoll in West Dallas. Initially, the arrest was without incident, but then Guzman was able to get possession of a pistol and took all five deputies hostage. What happened next has been referred to as The Trinity River Massacre. The author, Ken Bangs, was a young officer of the Dallas Police Department at the time. In The Levee, he has written the story. He has drawn from his memory, from court records, press records and from interviews with officers who worked the crime scene and those who participated in the most massive manhunt in the history of the Dallas Police Department.
