Our diarist, Fortunatus Purkett, gets himself in and out of numerous exciting and humorous scrapes as he attempts to discover why a sinister Union colonel is trying to destroy him. He ranges from Virginia to New Orleans, from Maryland to New York and at last, in a dramatic climax, defeats his nemesis as the battle of Gettysburg rages about them.
