Sofie and her sister Hilde live in the quiet German town of Münster. They want to get married and have loving families. But in 1534 a religious revolution turns their lives upside down. Münster falls under the sway of The Prophet, a religious fanatic who dreams of ushering in the Second Coming of Christ. The town becomes a surreal nightmare where polygamy is legal but personal possessions are not. Soon, Sofie must choose between the man she loves and a lifetime with one of the Prophet's lackeys, whom she loathes. But if she chooses love, Sofie forfeits her ability to protect Hilde when Hilde unwillingly becomes one of the Prophet's wives. At the same time, the forces of the Holy Roman Emperor besiege the town, ordered to destroy it for its religious rebellion. Sofie realizes that saving her sister requires saving the city of Münster, too.
