During His public life Christ often spoke of the Kingdom of God that He would establish on earth. This He accomplished by founding His Church - a union of all the faithful who are governed under one head, the Pope, and who profess the same faith and receive the same Sacraments. At the beginning of His public life, Christ selected twelve Apostles who were to preach His Gospel and continue His work. St. Luke records their names: Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the Less, Jude, Simon, and Judas Iscariot. The night of the Last Supper they were ordained priests. They were all bishops of the early Church, with the exception of Judas Iscariot. The invitation to this high calling was given the day after the miraculous draught of fishes when Christ said to them: Fear not, follow Me and I will make you fishers of men. One day near the close of Christ's life on earth, while He and the Apostles were walking through the country east of the Jordan near the town of Caesarea Philippi, He asked: Whom do men say that I am? The Apostles answered: Some say Thou art John the Baptist; others that Thou art Elias, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
