The title indicates the interior journey takes on his sixth album. Where the Americana singer/songwriter was previously in the process of looking outward, especially with the overt soul moves of his 2018 LP , he's looking within himself on this 2023 album, favoring acoustic instruments and pastoral arrangements. That earthy sheen is slightly deceptive, though, as is the appearance of folk legend on the record's title track: neither these songs nor their presentation is simple. may use string instruments as his foundation, but he threads in synths and electronic rhythms, elements he sweetens with a candied melodicism that can sometimes recall , as on the tender chorus of "Running on Time" or the finger-picking "Front Porchin'." This combination of intimate strumming and easy, pleasing melodies doesn't quite suggest something wild but it's nevertheless a welcome, satisfying left turn from a singer/songwriter who never quite follows a straight path. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
