Rosario Murillo Zambrana, the militant poet from the years of the unsuccessful National Sandinista Revolution, is now the woman on whom Daniel Ortega’s power, an old guerrilla fighter turned dictator, partly depends. Mystical, untamed, brutal, and violent, this story narrates the transformation of a woman who yearned for love and who has always believed in magic into a grotesque character, blinded by power. This narrative is based on Carlos Salinas Maldonado’s long interviews, his notes after years of following Rosario Murillo, observing her, listening to her, and writing about her. It also builds on the accusation by Rosario’s daughter, Zoilamérica Narváez, against Daniel Ortega of rape and collects information from sources close to Murillo at the time, who have requested anonymity. The facts are real, although the protagonist seems to emerge from the best literary fiction.
